Scanner Dimensions

Want to know more about our MRI machine before your scan day? Understanding the physical dimensions of the scanner can help you feel more prepared and comfortable. The infographic below provides a few key details about our scanner:

This image displays the scanner dimensions of the MRI used at CFMI in an artistic graphic. The most important dimensions are listed on the page.

Bed Dimensions:

  • Width: 21.5″
  • Length: 79″

Bore Dimensions:

  • Width: 23.13″
  • Height: 15.75″
  • Bore to Isocenter: 42.17″
    • This measurement is how far a participant will be in the scanner.

The inside of the scanner (the bore) is shaped like a long tube, and you will lie on a cushioned table (or bed) that slides into the center of the machine. Most brain scans take place with your head near the center of the scanner, and your legs may remain outside the bore.

If you have concerns about space or positioning, please let your research coordinator or your CFMI technician know. For more guidance, see our page on what to expect for participants.
