MRI Safety Training

Overview of the MRI Safety Training Program

Completion of the MRI Safety Training Program is required for all users working within Zone 3 or managing participant MR safety. The program consists of two parts: a virtual session and an in-person tour of the facility.

Users who have completed the safety training program have the following privileges/responsibilities:

  • Door access to CFMI and the ability to move throughout the facility independently.
  • Ability to supervise up to 3 individuals in MRI Safety Zones 3 and 4 who have not completed safety training, including research participants.
  • Access to the CFMI scheduling system and the ability to schedule MRI scans.
  • The ability to conduct MRI safety screening of participants and sign the MRI screening form indicating participant safety.

Our virtual session provides an introduction to the physics behind MRI, the MR environment, and CFMI’s safety procedures. The goal of the course is to equip visiting researchers with the knowledge they need to effectively manage their safety and the safety of their research participants, such as how to perform an implant review.

One of our Authorized Users (AUs) hosts Safety Training Part 1 sessions at the beginning of each month which are approximately 4 hours, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. We take attendance and attendees must attain a passing score on the post-session assessment to move on to Part 2.

We send a confirmation email with the zoom link the day prior to the session.

CFMI staff members host individual, in-person tours to introduce users to the facility. Each one-on-one tour is approximately 45 mins and typically hosted on Monday mornings, although other times may be offered based on need and staff availability.

In-person tour spots are limited, and users who will be conduct safety screenings or accompany participants to CFMI will be given priority.

The link to sign up for a tour will be provided upon completion of the virtual session.

CFMI safety procedures are constantly evolving, and users are expected to stay up to date with current safety procedures, including emergency protocols and safety screening practices. CFMI users who have previously completed safety training but have not scanned in a year or longer should complete the following steps:

  • Review safety materials found in the MRI Safety for Users Google Drive folder.
  • Print and fill out a new MR Environment Screening form. We keep the completed form on file at CFMI which clears you to move independently throughout the facility.

Optional: If you would like a guided safety training refresher, contact cfmi-scanning-team@georgetown.edu to request an in-person refresher tour. This will not be as long as the original Pt.2 tour caters towards your specific scanning needs and safety questions.
